THE CAMPUS

The University of Ioannina campus is located 5 km outside the city of Ioannina. It covers 800 acres of oak forest and meadows surrounding the historic Monastery of Dourouti. Three distinct building complexes house the Schools of the University with 170,000 sq. m. of lecture hall, office and laboratory space. Large classes are held in amphitheatres, seating two hundred persons. Scientific meetings and exhibits are held in a Conference Centre located in the newly constructed Medical Sciences complex.

A focal point of the campus is the Student Union building which contains a modern student cafeteria, serving over 6,000 meals a day. The Student Union building also contains a large Ceremonial Hall, where commencement exercises and other official functions of the University are held and Phegos, the University restaurant, where faculty, students and friends from the city of Ioannina meet in the evenings to enjoy a good dinner, listen to music or celebrate a special occasion.

Housing is provided on campus at nominal prices in five residence halls for 675 undergraduate students. A residence hall in the city of Ioannina houses an additional 470 undergraduate students. For students deciding to live off campus frequent bus service to and from the city of Ioannina is provided by the University.

Sports facilities at the University of Ioannina campus include a track and field stadium, outdoor tennis, basketball and volleyball courts and an indoor athletic centre, seating 1,000 spectators. An indoor swimming pool at the city residence hall is also available to the students and faculty members.

A jewel of the Ioannina campus is the old Dourouti convent, an 18th century building, which has recently been renovated and serves as a guest house for visitors to the University.
