UNIVERSITY STRUCTURE ANDADMINISTRATION |
The University is governed by the Senate, which is composed of the
Rector, two Vice-Rectors, the Deans of each School, the Chairmen of each Department and
representatives elected separately by the staff, the administrative personnel and the
students of the University. The Senate meets at least once a month and decides on all
major academic and administrative issues, while the Rector is responsible for implementing
the decisions of the Senate. The day-to-day running of the University is delegated to the
Chancery Council, a more flexible body, composed of the Rector, the Vice-Rectors, the
General Secretary, one representative of the students and one of the administrative
personnel.
The basic academic unit of the University is the Department, headed by
the Chairman of the Department. The General Assembly of the Department, a body with
similar composition as that of the Senate, decides on all academic and administrative
issues concerning the particular Department. Several Departments are loosely linked to
form the Schools of the University, while each Department is further subdivided into
Divisions on the basis of broad academic areas.
The administration of the University of Ioannina is in the best
tradition of democracy at work. All officials of the University (The Rector, Senate
members, the Deans, the Chairmen of Departments and the Directors of Divisions or
individual laboratories and clinics) are elected periodically by electoral bodies of
staff, administrative personnel and student representatives. Of particular importance is
the substantial participation of students who, through their own annual Student Elections,
send their representatives to all administrative bodies of the University.
