F.O.E.A. (Student Blood Donation Service of the University of Ioannina)

What is F.O.E.A.?

The Student Blood Donation Service of the University of Ioannina (F.O.E.A) was founded in 1980 by a group of medical students, with the purpose of informing the university community about the idea of voluntary blood donation.

Our final goal is to cover our country's needs in blood. Today F.O.E.A. has broadened its horizons; students of all disciplines, who are interested in disseminating the idea of voluntrary blood donation, as well as are interested in bone marrow transplantation, platelet donation and/or thalssaemia, are very welcome to participate.

F.O.E.A.'s activities:

Organizing blood donation on a weekly basis within the university's area, helping towards covering part of our country's needs in blood.

Organizing blood donation in the city center of Ioannina, open to all local residents.

Informing students of all faculties about blood donation, platelet donation, bone marrow transplantation, and prevention of thalassaemia.

Organizing events and scientific lectures about voluntary blood donation and other medical or social subjects.

Donated blood is necessary for:

Thousands of wounded people involved in car accidents.

People suffering from Cooley's desease (thalassaemia).

Patients who will have an operation as well as people suffering from blood diseases(i.e. leukaemia etc.).

Pregnant women facing clinical problems during labor.

About the blood donor:

You can be a blood donor, if you are healthy and between the age of 18 and 60 years.

Blood donation is absolutely painless, without any danger and lasts only 5-10 minutes.

The blood volume you are donating is replaced in your body within only 10 minutes, while the red blood cells are replaced within 3 months.

Men can donate blood every 3 months and women every 4 months.

By giving blood voluntarily, you automatcally acquire your Blood Donor's Card. With this card you can ask for blood equal to the volume you have donated in the case of personal or family need.

Keep in mind that blood is a gift necessary for life and it is offered exclusively by human.
